Path of Exile Item Upgrades

Item upgrades are a common and crucial method to enhance the performance of numerous items in Path of Exile. They can also provide additional damage, AD or even affixes.

Armor

The Jeweler can create the highest levels of gems with the exception of rare and legendary ones which require a certain level to get. Unlike other upgrade components, jewels can be swapped with a identical jewel without destroying it. However you can only swap out a jewel in an item of equipment once.

It is typical to use more gems for aesthetic reasons. In addition to enhancing performance, the jewels also create a surface that is harder than steel, so the repeated friction with pivots doesn't damage them as easily.
